Dr. Edward Hughes is a scientific leader in the field of AI and a world expert on fast adaptation. His teams have pioneered large-scale reinforcement learning, the paradigm of Cooperative AI, and ad-hoc collaboration between machines and humans. Edward is a generalist, equally passionate about science, engineering and leadership. He draws inspiration from diverse sources, including cultural evolution, social psychology, economics, organisational design, and meta-learning. He is happiest driving rapid, measurable progress on high-risk, high-impact projects.
Edward is currently a Staff Research Engineer at DeepMind. He received his PhD in Theoretical Physics from Queen Mary University of London on applications of string theory to particle scattering. He read Mathematics at Cambridge University, where he graduated with Distinction.

Biography | Conductor

Dr. Edward Hughes is co-Director of Music at Holy Trinity, Hereford and cofounder-conductor of the Godwine Choir, with whom he has recorded on the EM Records label and toured internationally. His interests include Flemish polyphony of the late Renaissance and English choral music of the early 20th century. He is also a staunch supporter of contemporary composers.
Edward started his musical career as a choral scholar at St. Catharine’s College under Edward Wickham. He was principal oboist of the Cambridge University Music Society orchestra, and went on to direct the University of Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra. He was formerly Director of Music at Hornsey Parish Church, London. Edward has studied conducting with Paul Spicer and Patrick Allies, voice with Robert Rice and organ with Nicholas Morris.
